A drug used in the treatment of life- or sight-threatening infection with CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV) in patients whose immune systems (see IMMUNITY) are compromised. Administered by intravenous transfusion, the drug is toxic and should be prescribed only when the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is also used for the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection in patients who have had a liver transplant.
