Emergency procedures to help an ill or injured person before he or she receives expert medical attention or is admitted to hospital. Courses of instruction in first aid comprise 6–12 sessions, each of about 2 hours’ duration. Syllabuses of instruction are published by various organisations, the principal ones being the British Red Cross, the St John Ambulance Association, and the St Andrew’s Ambulance Association.
