Pronounced wasting; a common symptom of many diseases, particularly those which are associated with a prolonged or repeated rise of temperature, such as TUBERCULOSIS. It is also associated with diseases of the alimentary system in which digestion is inefficient, or in which the food is not fully absorbed: for example, in long-standing diarrhoea, whatever its cause. It is also a marked feature of severe malnutrition and malignant disease.
