The bulb of Colchicum autumnale, or meadow-saffron, has long been used as a remedy for GOUT. How it acts is not quite certain.

Uses Its main use is in gout, for which colchicine, the active principle of colchicum, in doses of 0·5 mg every one or two hours until the pain is relieved, followed by 0·5 mg thrice daily for about a week, is the form generally employed.
