Chlorpromazine is chemically related to the antihistamine drug, PROMETHAZINE HYDROCHLORIDE. One of the first antipsychotic drugs to be marketed, it is used extensively in psychiatry on account of its action in calming psychotic activity without producing undue general depression or clouding of consciousness. The drug is used particularly in SCHIZOPHRENIA and mania. It carries a risk of contact sensitisation, so should be handled with care, and the drug has a wide range of side-effects.
