(in the form of amiodarone hydrochloride) is a drug used to treat ARRHYTHMIA of the HEART and initiated only under supervision in hospital or by an appropriate specialist. Given by mouth or intravenous infusion, amiodarone can help to control paroxysmal supraventricular, nodal and ventricular TACHYCARDIA as well as FIBRILLATION of the auricles and ventricles of the heart. It may take some time to achieve control, and several weeks to be eliminated from the body when treatment is stopped. The drug has a range of potentially serious side-eﬀects.
